It\u2019s one thing to know something, but how to actually apply what we know and live it is not the same thing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">This year I learned more about applying what we know when I heard a woman say, \u201cI am in prison, but prison isn\u2019t in me.\u201d She said it during a restorative justice <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ejprob.ro\/index.pl\/huikahi_restorative_circlesgroup_process_for_self-directed_reentry_planning_and_family_healing\">group <em>reentry planning process<\/em><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">, that by most rational people\u2019s judgments, she is unlikely to ever use. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">The woman is serving a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">Her family does not live in Hawai\u2019i. She has not seen most of her children and grandchildren for many years and she has missed most of the important life events that they have experienced. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">Instead of being depressed and sad about what she has missed for 30 years the woman beams full of hope and possibilities!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">How does she do this? How does she find anything positive in a life sentence in prison missing her family? <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">The imprisoned woman is an example of Harvard psychology <a href=\" http:\/\/chronicle.com\/article\/The-Art-of-Living-Mindfully\/63292\/\">professor Ellen Langer\u2019s definition of someone who lives \u201cmindfully.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ellenlanger.com\/  \">Langer\u2019s research for over 30 years<\/a> shows that people who practice \u201cpaying attention\u201d to what they think, can create happier and healthier lives despite illness, aging and other things we normally think of as difficult. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">The woman in prison told me that she keeps her positive attitude by working everyday to help other people, including the people her crime and incarceration seriously hurt. She sees everyday as an opportunity to try and repair some of the harm she caused. She keeps her mind full of possibilities and solutions to her problems instead of letting herself become defined by the problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">The Dalai Lama also encourages others to live mindfully, and he says that in our saddest and most painful moments, caring about others will keep us from suffering: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rudyh.org\/dalai-lama-quotes-quotations.htm\">\u201cIf you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion.\u201d <\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--><!--[endif]--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\">I think the late<a href=\" http:\/\/www.sfbta.org\/about_sfbt.html  \"> Insoo Kim Berg, a co-founder of solution focused brief therapy, <\/a>would love Langer\u2019s approach and I know for sure that she would agree the woman in prison does not have to let prison be in her.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><strong><!--[endif]--><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; font-family: Arial;\"><strong><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most people have heard that they can look at situations anyway they want, that we don\u2019t have to suffer by adverse situations. \u201cWe cannot escape pain, but suffering is optional,\u201d but how exactly do you do this?
