{"id":6,"date":"2008-07-04T00:21:32","date_gmt":"2008-07-04T07:21:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lorennwalker.com\/blog\/?p=6"},"modified":"2008-07-05T02:50:16","modified_gmt":"2008-07-05T09:50:16","slug":"visit-to-a-java-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.lorennwalker.com\/blog\/?p=6","title":{"rendered":"Visit to a Java Prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On June 24, 2008 I spent the day in\u00a0Yogyakarta a.k.a. <em>Jogjakarta<\/em>, on Java, the main Indonesian island. \u00a0It took a lot of work by a great woman, Zunly Nadia, and after several months of paper work, I was allowed to visit a prison. \u00a0The prison which I am standing in front of below houses 446 people, 75% of which are there for drug offenses. \u00a0They were mostly men, but there were some women and one who had a beautiful eight month old baby who was born in the prison.<\/p>\n<p>The conditions were striking compared to the prisons I have visited in the United States, Europe and New Zealand. \u00a0The floors of the housing units were dirt; water was provided by cement ditches around the dormitories; laundry was done by each person (apparently in the ditches) and hung out to dry on ropes strung outside their rooms; the towels they had to use were very worn and dirty. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The people generally looked frail and thin. \u00a0I was allowed to take some photos and one below is of the cooking room which consisted mainly of several large pots on a fire stove. \u00a0There was a wooden wagon full of sour looking yellowed rice. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I visited a prison that was worse than Hawai\u2018i state prisons.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lorennwalker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/p1010053.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7\" title=\"p1010053\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lorennwalker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/p1010053-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Lorenn at the Java Prison\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lorennwalker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/p1010050.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-8\" title=\"p1010050\" src=\"http:\/\/www.lorennwalker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/07\/p1010050-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"Java prison cooking room\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On June 24, 2008 I spent the day in\u00a0Yogyakarta a.k.a.
